As wedding photographers, we all know how important it is to capture every detail of a couple’s big day. Those carefully curated flatlays of invitations, rings, and other meaningful items not only tell a part of the story but also add a touch of elegance to your portfolio. To create those swoon-worthy detail shots, having a well-equipped styling kit is essential. Let’s dive into the must-have items that can elevate your flatlays and make them truly stand out.

1. Styling Mats & Backgrounds

Your background sets the stage for the entire flatlay. Invest in high-quality styling mats or boards in neutral tones like soft blush, light blues, cream, or grey. These colours are versatile and won’t distract from the items you’re photographing. A textured mat can add depth, while a smooth surface keeps things clean and modern. Consider having a few different options to suit various wedding styles.

Some of my favourite styling mats and backgrounds companies:
Olive & Oak fabric styling mats
Chasing Stone painted styling mats

2. Fabric & Textiles

Delicate fabrics like silk ribbons, linen, and tulle can add an extra layer of elegance to your flatlays. These can be draped or styled to lead the viewer’s eye through the image. Choose fabrics in soft, complementary colors that won’t overpower the details. These textiles can also help to fill empty spaces in your composition, making the flatlay feel complete.

You can find great ribbons from either Amazon, Esty, or specific shops that specialize in ribbons:

TONO + Co

3. Ring Boxes & Trays

A stylish ring box is a must for showcasing those sparkling rings. Opt for vintage-inspired velvet boxes or sleek modern designs depending on the couple’s style. Small decorative trays can also add a touch of luxury to your flatlay. Consider metallic, clay or marble finishes that reflect light beautifully and pair well with most wedding colour schemes.

Some of my favourite shops to buy rings and trinket trays from:

The Mrs Box

– Local antique shops

4. Stationery Styling Tools

When it comes to invitations and other paper goods, acrylic blocks or clear styling risers are your best friends. These tools allow you to layer pieces without them lying flat on the surface, creating dimension and interest in your shots. I also recommend circular acrylic risers to help with larger flowers stay standing up. Having some sticky tac available to help keep rings standing upright is always a good idea as well.

Here are some great places to get these blocks:

5. Decorative Elements

Incorporating small decorative elements can elevate your flatlays from simple to stunning. Think vintage stamps, wax seals, heirloom jewelry, small bust statues, frames, artwork, books, fruit, or small florals that tie into the wedding’s theme. These little details add character and help tell the couple’s unique story. Just be mindful not to overcrowd the composition—sometimes less is more.

6. Natural Elements

Don’t forget about the beauty of nature! Incorporating organic elements like greenery, petals, or fresh and/or dried florals can bring a touch of life to your flatlays. These natural additions can soften the look and add a romantic, whimsical feel. Choose elements that complement the color palette of the wedding to maintain harmony in your shots. Asking the florist to include some extra stems to use in your flatlays will help to keep the styling in line with the rest of the photos.

7. Lighting Tools

Good lighting is crucial for any photograph, but especially for flatlays. A portable reflector can help you bounce light onto your setup, reducing harsh shadows and bringing out the details.

8. Tweezers & Scissors

Precision is key when arranging tiny elements in a flatlay. A pair of fine-point tweezers will allow you to place small items like rings or stamps exactly where you want them without disturbing the rest of the composition. A good pair of scissors can help you trim ribbons or flowers on the spot, ensuring everything looks polished.

9. Personal Touches

Finally, don’t forget to add personal touches that resonate with the couple’s style and story. Whether it’s a meaningful trinket, a snippet of fabric from the wedding dress, or a piece of their cultural heritage, these touches make the flatlay uniquely theirs.

A well-curated styling kit is an invaluable asset for any wedding photographer. With the right tools and a creative eye, you can craft detail shots that not only enhance your portfolio but also become cherished memories for your clients. So, take some time to invest in these essentials, and watch as your flatlays transform into works of art.

xo, Hilary
