Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding. It sets the tone for the day, influences your guest experience, and, of course, becomes the backdrop for so many of your wedding photographs.
As an Ottawa wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph weddings in a wide variety of spaces throughout Ottawa and the surrounding area. While there are plenty of beautiful venues to choose from, there are a few that consistently stand out for their setting, architecture, atmosphere, and the overall experience they offer couples and their guests.
Whether you’re looking for a classic Ottawa wedding, a modern and artistic setting, or a countryside celebration surrounded by nature, here are some of my favourite wedding venues in Ottawa and the surrounding area.
National Arts Centre
Located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the National Arts Centre is a great option for couples who want a wedding that feels distinctly connected to the city.
The NAC combines modern architecture with some of the best views in downtown Ottawa, including the Chateau Laurier and surrounding landmarks. Its large windows bring plenty of natural light into the event spaces, while the central location means you have no shortage of options for wedding portraits nearby.
One of my favourite things about photographing weddings at the NAC is the variety. You can have beautiful, polished indoor photographs in the event spaces, then step outside for portraits with the architecture and Ottawa skyline as your backdrop. The natural light that pours in all day can only be described as “ethereal”.
Best for: Couples looking for a modern, elegant downtown wedding with great city views and plenty of architectural interest.
Fairmont Château Laurier
It’s difficult to make a list of the best Ottawa wedding venues without including the Fairmont Château Laurier.
One of Ottawa’s most recognizable landmarks, the Château Laurier offers the kind of classic, historic setting that never really goes out of style. From the grand architecture and sweeping staircases to the elegant ballrooms, there are beautiful details around practically every corner.
Its downtown location is another major advantage. Couples can take advantage of the hotel itself for portraits, while also being within walking distance of Major’s Hill Park, the Rideau Canal, Parliament Hill, and some of Ottawa’s most recognizable streets and buildings.
For couples envisioning a formal, timeless wedding, the Château is hard to beat.
Best for: Classic, elegant weddings with historic architecture, formal portraits, and a timeless feel.
Stonefields Estate
If you love the idea of a countryside wedding but still want something polished and elevated, Stonefields Estate is one of the Ottawa area’s standout venues. Perfect for the elegant, garden party feeling.
Located on a historic 120-acre property near Carleton Place, Stonefields brings together rolling fields, heritage buildings, gardens, and beautifully designed event spaces. The result is a venue that feels rural without leaning too heavily into a traditional rustic aesthetic.
The Loft, a restored barn with soaring ceilings and chandeliers, provides a beautiful reception setting, while the surrounding property gives couples plenty of options for outdoor portraits and photographs throughout the day.
Another benefit is the way the venue is designed around the wedding experience. Getting ready, the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and reception can all happen on the same property, making the day feel seamless for both couples and guests.
Best for: Couples who want a nature-filled wedding with an elevated, refined feel and lots of outdoor photo opportunities.
Aquatopia
Aquatopia is one of the more unique wedding venues in the Ottawa area. Located in Carp, the glass-roofed conservatory creates an indoor tropical garden setting that feels very different from the typical Ottawa wedding venue.
The combination of lush greenery, water features, glass, and natural light makes the space incredibly distinctive. And because the majority of the experience takes place indoors, it can be a particularly appealing option for couples who want an outdoor-inspired wedding without having to worry quite as much about the weather.
From a photography perspective, there is also plenty to work with. The greenery and architectural details create a variety of backgrounds without needing to leave the venue.
If you’re looking for something a little unexpected, Aquatopia is definitely worth adding to your venue tour list.
Best for: Couples looking for a unique, garden-inspired wedding venue with a tropical feel and lots of natural light.
Aquatopia Water Garden Conservatory
National Gallery of Canada
For couples who want their wedding venue to feel like an experience in itself, the National Gallery of Canada is a pretty incredible option.
The Gallery’s modern glass-and-granite architecture provides a dramatic backdrop for a wedding, while the surrounding galleries and public spaces add an artistic element that you simply won’t find at a traditional wedding venue.
The location is also fantastic for photography. Situated on Sussex Drive, the Gallery is close to Parliament Hill, the ByWard Market, Major’s Hill Park, and plenty of other downtown locations. And, of course, the iconic exterior — including Louise Bourgeois’ Maman sculpture — provides an instantly recognizable Ottawa backdrop.
This is a venue that works particularly well for couples who want their wedding to feel modern, artistic, and distinctly Ottawa.
Best for: Art and architecture lovers, modern couples, and anyone looking for something outside the traditional ballroom or barn wedding.
Thee Farm
Just outside Ottawa in Kemptville, Thee Farm offers something a little different: a countryside wedding venue designed around both the wedding itself and the experience of staying on the property.
Set on a large rural property with forests, gardens, a private lake, and plenty of outdoor space, Thee Farm combines a rustic setting with a more elevated approach to weddings. The property includes a restored farmhouse, event spaces, and unique accommodation options including geodesic glamping domes.
For couples who want their wedding to feel more like a weekend away than a single event, this is a particularly interesting option. Guests can stay on-site, spend time outdoors, and enjoy the property before and after the wedding.
The setting also gives photographers plenty of variety, from forest and lakeside portraits to the more polished interiors and event spaces.
Best for: Couples looking for a countryside wedding with on-site accommodations and a more immersive wedding-weekend experience.
Thee Farm Event & Wellness Centre
Le Belvédère
Technically just across the river in Wakefield, Quebec, Le Belvédère absolutely deserves a place on any list of the best wedding venues near Ottawa.
And the view is absolutely the first thing you’ll notice.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Gatineau landscape, Le Belvédère gives couples a dramatic natural backdrop that is difficult to replicate anywhere else in the region. The outdoor ceremony space takes full advantage of the view, while the venue also has a beautiful indoor ceremony option should the weather not cooperate.
The venue is designed to make the wedding day relatively seamless, with getting-ready spaces, ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing all taking place on the property. That also means there are plenty of opportunities for photographs without needing to spend a large portion of the day travelling between locations.
For couples who want a destination feel without having to travel far from Ottawa, Le Belvédère is a favourite for good reason.
Best for: Couples who want incredible scenery, an elevated countryside setting, and a wedding that feels a little like a destination.
Le Peaches & Cream
Just outside Ottawa in Low, Quebec, Le Peaches & Cream is one of those venues that feels like a destination without requiring a destination wedding. Set among fields, forest, and natural surroundings in the Gatineau Hills, the property combines a modern event space with a more relaxed countryside setting.
The venue is designed to make the most of natural light, with large windows and bright, thoughtfully designed spaces that transition beautifully from day to evening. Outside, there are plenty of opportunities for portraits among the surrounding landscape, making it easy to incorporate the property into your wedding photographs without spending much of the day travelling between locations.
One of the things that makes Le Peaches & Cream particularly appealing is the opportunity to turn your wedding into more of a weekend experience. The property offers on-site accommodation, allowing couples and their guests to stay together and enjoy more time at the venue before and after the wedding.
Although it’s technically in Quebec, its proximity to Ottawa makes it a natural choice for couples planning an Ottawa-area wedding — and definitely one worth adding to your venue tour list.
Best for: Couples looking for a modern countryside venue with beautiful natural surroundings, plenty of natural light, and the option to turn their wedding into a weekend getaway.
Ottawa Art Gallery
For couples looking for something modern, creative, and a little outside the traditional wedding venue, the Ottawa Art Gallery is a fantastic option in the heart of downtown Ottawa.
The gallery offers several spaces for weddings and celebrations, including the spacious Alma Duncan Salon, Jackson Café, and outdoor terraces. The contemporary architecture and rotating exhibitions give the venue plenty of visual interest, while the large windows and downtown setting provide a bright, modern backdrop for wedding photographs.
One of the things I love about the OAG as a wedding venue is the amount of flexibility the space gives you. The modern, open setting creates a beautiful blank canvas that you can really make your own. You can bring in statement florals, draping, candles, custom installations, or keep things simple and minimal — there’s plenty of room to create a design that feels completely personal to you. You have the freedom to transform the space and let your decor set the tone for the celebration.
For couples having a smaller celebration, the more intimate spaces can be particularly appealing. Jackson Café can accommodate smaller weddings and receptions, while the Galerie Annexe offers an intimate setting surrounded by contemporary art.
Best for: Couples looking for a modern, artistic wedding venue with a downtown location and a more intimate, contemporary feel.
Choosing the Right Ottawa Wedding Venue
There really isn’t one “best” wedding venue in Ottawa. The right venue depends on the kind of wedding you’re planning, the experience you want your guests to have, and the overall feeling you want your photographs to have.
If you’re drawn to classic architecture and timeless elegance, the Fairmont Château Laurier is an obvious choice. For something modern and distinctly Ottawa, the NAC or National Gallery of Canada offer something different from a traditional wedding venue.
If you picture your wedding surrounded by fields, gardens, and open space, Stonefields, Thee Farm, and Le Belvédère are all worth exploring. And if you want something that feels genuinely unique, Aquatopia is hard to compare to anything else in the area.
One of the things I always recommend to couples is to think beyond how a venue looks during a tour. Consider how your wedding day will actually move through the space. Where will you get ready? Where will your ceremony take place? Where will you take portraits if it rains? Can your guests comfortably move from one part of the day to the next?
And, of course, think about how the venue feels to you. Your wedding photographs should reflect the experience you had on the day, not just the room you chose.
